about

Print and materials-led textile designer Lucy Simpson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1991. She undertook her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Edinburgh, specialising in Printed Textile Design, graduating in 2013. In 2014 she completed her Masters, also at the University of Edinburgh, and in September 2014 she was invited to exhibit her work with Designersblock at London Design Festival, at MoOD Innovation Platform in Belgium and again with Designerblock at the Ex-Ansaldo, Via Tortona during Milan Design Week, April 2015.

The omnipresence of technology, and resulting lack of tactility through digital printing, has pushed her to experiment with unconventional hand-printing techniques and mediums, creating relief-like structures that need to be experienced. She has an experimental approach to design, always looking to work with unexpected materials to create an explosion of tactility and colour.

Her work has been included in various trend publications, including: WGSN online, Mix Magazine and Elle Decoration amongst others.

In March 2015 she was awarded a grant by East Lothian Council to continue her work after graduating and in March 2016 she was awarded one of the inaugural Scottish Inches Carr Trust Graduate Prizes. This year her textiles have been invited to be displayed within The National Museum of Scotland as part of the Fashion Gallery, launching in July 2016.
